Daffodil Fling

A returning gift, year after year, from garage de-cluttering.

Daffodil Fling

As Fall rolls around each year, I look ahead to Spring bulbs flowering and eagerly head to the garden center to pick out what’s sure to be a fabulous display in Springtime.  More than once, and maybe you can relate, those beautiful bulbs never get planted.  They begin, like so many other “things” to take up precious space on some shelf in the garage.

At least 10 years ago, I realized at a certain point in the Fall that, this sure to be beautiful package of daffodils, was just waiting for me, waiting, waiting.  Every time I walked by them I heard, “Hey, Mar, how about now, don’t you have just a few minutes to get me into the ground?”   Okay, that’s enough, out you go!  I took the package to the back of my property where there is a beautiful old stone wall , beyond, just enough woods to create habitat for deer, coyotes, who knows what else.  I reached into the bag and with however many I could hold, just started releasing them into the woods.  They won’t grow, I thought, but, at least they’ll be returned to Mother Earth, happy to be a part of the decomposing forest versus a dusty, crowded shelf.

Well, I’ll be damned.  Next Spring, quite by chance as I was walking about my yard seeing what treasures were coming up, there was a glorious sea of yellow that caught my eye in the woods.  And there it was, all the daffodils pushing through the leaves from the previous Fall, stopping me in my tracks.  Every year I somehow forget that they are beyond the wall, waiting for me to notice them once again.  I can even see them from my kitchen window, my bedroom, my sunroom.  Those things want to be noticed!!

Today as I look into the woods I am simultaneously preparing for the “Spirited Women” group which meets monthly.  The topic for this month is “Letting Go.”  How appropriate!  Seeing those daffodils show up year after year, reminds me that sometimes when we let go, do not know what the outcome will be, we receive so much more than expected.  We just have to TRUST that we’re making the right move, just letting go. Being thrown into something that we’re not quite sure of the outcome can be a little scary, moves us out of our comfort zone.

Where in your life do you need to let go?  Letting go is a form of releasing attachment to situations, people, things, memories or even a part of us.  The road to well-being is not a path of adding to or attaining more, but, usually of letting go, releasing what no longer serves you.  And like the daffodils, something incredibly awesome, may await you on the other side of the stone wall.
