WHS Students to Do a "Day of Thanksgiving"

The National Honor Society's officers hope Saturday's volunteer day becomes a tradition.

Westborough High School students raking seniors' lawns in November could become a Thanksgiving symbol in town.

The school's National Honor Society officers hope so.

Saturday, the first school-wide "Day of Thanksgiving" organized by the group will send students to volunteer among 16 sites in town, including 11 seniors' yards, NHS President Addie Egan said.

NHS members will coordinate the sites and contact the volunteers, she said.

"We're hoping this becomes a National Honor Society tradition," Egan said.

"A lot of people came out of the woodwork and were really excited to have an opportunity. Our goal was just to pose the opportunity. We knew that a lot of kids have the desire to do service, especially this time of year, with Thanksgiving coming up."

The students will meet and register at Westborough High at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and then head to their sites, Egan said.

Among the projects are trail maintenance, and work at the schools, she said.

"As part of our mission as officers, coming into the year, we wanted to get involved with more service, and we wanted to start a lot of it -- the core of it -- with NHS," Egan said.

"We saw the model of the 'Rangers Give Back Day' in August, we saw how successful that was, and we thought, 'What better way to involve more people, and to use NHS -- the members are great leaders of the school -- as site coordinators, and expand the entire program to all of the high school."
