'Friends' Group Broadens Mission

The Friends of Westborough Inc. held an informal coffee Tuesday.

The former Friends of the Westborough Senior Center Inc. will continue supporting Westborough interests -- under a new name, and a mission more focused on helping outreach efforts.

The Friends of Westborough Inc. held an informal coffee program Tuesday at the Congregational Church of Westborough.

In July, the town and the Westborough Council on Aging announced they had stopped accepting funds from the non-profit Friends of the Westborough Senior Center Inc., citing financial concerns.

A new Westborough Senior Center Supporters group now has formed, according to the Westborough Senior Scene's November issue.

And the Friends of Westborough will "no longer support the senior center," although it will assist seniors in need, President Priscilla Federici said.

"We’re going to continue to support the elderly. And for people who are having a difficult time, we now are going to give money," she said.

Westborough Youth and Family Services Director John Badenhausen attended Tuesday's event.

“We’re going to work through outreach people. They will tell us” who needs assistance, Federici said.

The group will fulfill a request from St. Luke the Evangelist Parish for financial support, using unexpended funds, Federici said.

The Friends of Westborough will begin fundraising, and holding events, next year, she said.

And, membership will be free until next spring, Federici said. Dues are $5 for membership running from September to August, according to membership applications available during Tuesday's event.

Federici said "we've moved on" from the matter leading to the new mission.

"It was very hurtful, because we’re a bunch of volunteers that just wanted to do good for people, and did. Now, we’ve moved on," she said.
