Resident Eyes Crosswalk Signage

Westborough’s crosswalks would become more visible under one resident’s annual town meeting proposal.

Upgrading the crosswalks’ signage and visibility would cost $20,000 total, or about $1,000 each, Town Manager Jim Malloy told selectmen Tuesday night.

Resident Bruce Tretter will submit the request for the March 16 annual town meeting warrant.

Tretter told selectmen that Public Works Manager John Walden installed crosswalk changes this week at Lyman at East Main streets, at the Willows at Westborough.

“John modeled them after Northborough,” Tretter said.

“They are brilliantly bright” and show “a stick figure walking across on a neon green with black print. And then, underneath that, is an arrow pointing to where the crosswalk is,” he said.

Malloy said the draft warrant includes 15 articles.

Two requests aren’t included: the crosswalk proposal, and a Forbes Municipal Building roof project to address issues related to the last Nor'easter, he said.

And a town hall land survey funding request might be removed, he said.

Selectmen will close the warrant Feb. 26, he said.

Additional articles will be accepted until then, he said.

“Earlier is always better,” Malloy said.
