New Westborough Cemetery OK'd

Town land on Nourse Street would be used.

Westborough’s newest cemetery has moved closer to developing.

Tuesday night, the board of health approved the Nourse Street site after a public hearing with engineer Stephen Doret.

The cemetery is planned for about six acres of about a 32-acre site owned by the town, Doret said. The entire property was originally 44 acres, which the state bought and made part of the state hospital site, he said.

A restriction allows Westborough to own the 32 acres as long as a cemetery is planned there, Doret said.

“The other cemeteries in town have a limited number of years,” he said.

The next step is to meet with the planning board and “develop the roadways,” work that public works employees could do between seasons, Doret said.

The town could “perhaps use (the site) as a tree nursery” in the interim period before developing the cemetery, he said.
