Ice Slows Schools, Commute

The National Weather Service has a winter weather advisory in effect until 2 p.m.

Area schools and the morning commute both started slowly today due to icy roads.

The conditions began Sunday afternoon and into the evening, when a small amount of snow and freezing rain fell.

The slick roads were a contributing factor in four accidents in Westborough on Sunday afternoon, Fire Capt. Robert Rand said today: at 3:24 p.m., a crash with no injuries at 130 Nourse St.; at 3:27 p.m., a crash with injuries at 272 East Main St.; at 3:36 p.m., a crash with injuries at 330 Turnpike Road; and at 4:03 p.m., a crash with injuries at Hopkinton Road at North Street.

The following local schools have two-hour delays today, according to CBSLocal.com : Algonquin Regional High School; Assabet Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School; Grafton; Marlborough; Northborough; Shrewsbury; Southborough; Westborough; Al Hamra Academy in Shrewsbury; the Crossroads School in Natick; eBridge Montessori School in Westborough; and Shrewsbury Montessori.

There is no morning Kindergarten in Westborough, Southborough, Shrewsbury and Northborough.

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a winter weather advisory for Central and Western Mass. until 2 p.m.

Untreated roads will be slippery, the agency says on its website. And ice could bring down tree limbs, causing isolated outages.
