Cosmetic Dentistry Can Change Your Life

It's important to have strong bone to anchor the implants, although bone grafting is an option if the depth or width of your jawbone is inadequate.

Recently I've shared some of the cosmetic dentistry procedures available to patients, including teeth straightening as well as various options to whiten and reshape teeth. However, there is one restorative procedure that deserves a comprehensive discussion of its own.

Dental implants have surged in popularity over the last twenty years and revolutionized the way people feel about improving the uniformity of their teeth. Implants feel, function, and even look more like your own teeth than any other tooth replacement options such as bridges or dentures and they are long lasting.

If you have a missing tooth or teeth, not only are you likely self-conscious about flashing your smile, you may be more susceptible to bone degeneration or jaw problems. Remaining teeth can also shift, causing pain. Implants provide a solution to these potential health issues as well as a more natural and comfortable tooth replacement option for many people.

If you think you are a candidate for implants, schedule a consultation to talk about your personal situation. It's important to have strong bone to anchor the implants, although bone grafting is an option if the depth or width of your jawbone is inadequate. If your bone structure is sufficient, you will then move ahead to surgical consultation that may include x-rays or even a CAT scan to determine placement; once preliminary work is done, you'll be set to schedule the implant itself. Three or four months later, the implant will have fused to the bone and your dentist will attach the abutment and crown. Voila! A brand new, natural-looking replacement "tooth" that will restore your confidence in your smile.

Many of the surgical processes involved in dental implantation can be performed onsite at a dentist's office, and it's an exciting option as a tooth replacement solution, yielding happy patients whose implants have made a positive impact on their lives.
