Something New at The Old Village Lumber

Now here's what we all need to do once they open: Shop there. Often.

In 1983, long before we had met, my husband struck out from his hometown of Wellesley looking to buy his first house. He took a chance on Westborough, wisely banking on its proximity to the crossroads of major highways. The house he bought on Summer Street had everything this single guy could want: a three-car garage, and a short walk to the Piccadilly Pub and Village Lumber. Fast forward 29 years-we still live in the house. But sadly, “the Pic” is gone and Village Lumber closed its doors last year. Downtown just hasn’t been the same.

Recently, Turns out the people bought it. They plan to keep Westborough Paint at its current East Main Street location, and the new hardware store will open in the spring. It will be called Village Hardware and Supply.

Big improvements are taking place. The old lumber storage building has been rebuilt. The inside of the old store was totally gutted and is now undergoing a major renovation. Plans for the exterior include an attractive new color scheme of gray siding with black shutters and off-white trim; red awnings, and a new entry. A retro-looking roof sign is proposed. According to owner Doug Curving, the business concept is to provide a clean, well-merchandised, enjoyable atmosphere and staff it with people who understand the product and offer personal service. I can’t wait!

Now here’s what we all need to do once they open: Shop there. Often. I don’t know about you, but I’m not so worried about the survival of the big box stores out on Route 9. On the other hand, it’s up to us to make sure this new business succeeds. Our downtown is important. A vibrant downtown is good for us all. Let’s all try, whenever possible, to spend our money in town, whether it be at a hardware store, supermarket, restaurant, boutique or whatever. Small business is at the heart of our economy. It is a big thing you can do at the local level to help.

I wish Doug and his staff the very best. Congratulations! See you in the spring. Now all we need is a downtown pub.
