Oh! I have such a pain in my …. Hands?

        You’ve heard the saying “you are or I have such a pain in my….”, but recently my students have been asking about the pain in their hands.  Think about everything you do with your hands from chopping and preparing food, typing, writing notes by hand (yes some of us still do that) and even to opening the tight lid off a jar.  If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis in your wrists or hands these simple everyday tasks can become excruciating.  So more and more I find my students asking “How can yoga help with the pain in my hands?”.

            In Svaroopa® Yoga we say that “it all begins at the tailbone”.  What that means is that the tensions deep in the core of your spine causes physical and often painful ailments in the rest of your body.  Svaroopa ® Yoga excels at unraveling these core tensions, using well aligned and propped yoga poses and breathing practices in both classes and private yoga therapy sessions.  We call this core opening.  That is the good news, these simple practices can provide most students with some immediate relief of their pain levels even after just on class or private session. 

            You may ask “If that’s the good news what is the bad news”, well your hands are the farthest part of your body from your tailbone and remember “it all begins at the tailbone”.  Luckily Svaroopa® yoga classes and yoga therapy provide core opening from the base of your spine at the tailbone all the way to the top through your rib cage.  This is key to get relief in your hands.  You must get release at the base and follow it up the spine and include a deep release in the rib cage to carry changes down your arms and into your hands.
