Youth Management Workshop Held in June

Workshop is free but registration is required.

St. Mary’s Credit Union announced last week that it will present a community service workshop on Saturday, June 14, to educate young people about managing personal finances.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and is free.

The workshop will take place at the credit union’s branch office located at 1 Northboro Road in Marlborough.

Everybody, including non-members of the credit union and parents are welcome to attend – but pre-registration is required.

St. Mary’s Credit Union President and CEO James C. Garvey noted that, “there is, unfortunately, a disturbing lack of knowledge about managing money among young people. Knowing that schools are already hard-pressed to offer these programs within the existing school day, St. Mary’s Credit Union has decided to take a lead role locally to address this important need within the community.”

The workshop will focus upon four areas, including:

  • Checking accounts, savings accounts, and electronic banking
  • Loans, credit and collections
  • Setting goals and budgeting
  • Planning for the future - job hunting to career tips

Breakfast and lunch are included in the workshop, as well as prizes and giveaways throughout the day.

“We know the importance of keeping young people’s attention and that’s why we are designing the day to be both fun and educational,” said St. Mary’s Credit Union Marketing Vice President Anthony J. Battista. “As students graduate from high school and begin college – they should have some basic skills and knowledge about managing their money. We will teach them about budgets, credit, and avoiding common traps that create debt. I hope that a lot of people will take advantage of this opportunity”.
