Selectmen OK Google eCity Signs

A Google re-seller in Westborough offered to have signs created.

New road signs at Westborough's entrances will recognize the town's business presence on the information superhighway.

Selectmen voted 2-1 on Tuesday night to accept a Google re-seller in Westborough's offer to have signs created noting Westborough being the 2013 Google eCity for Massachusetts.

The re-seller will fund the signs, which will be placed "along the sides of the roads, as you enter into town, (at) about four or five different locations, Town Manager Jim Malloy said.

In August, Google honored Westborough for having "the strongest online business community" in Massachusetts.

"A lot of towns, when you enter them, you'll see a sign: 'Home of the 1998 champion football team' or whatever. We have the Tree City USA signs," Selectman Timothy Dodd said.

"I think having signs as people enter the town shows our accomplishment. This is a pretty incredible accomplishment. I think we were the only town in Massachusetts to win this."

Dodd wondered if people would know the sign's significance.

Vice Chairman George Barrette said they "could Google it."

Selectman Denny Drewry voted against the idea.

"Are we going to do this for Facebook and everybody else, and Twitter and all that stuff?" he said.

"I think signs should be like for the rotary club, veterans' things, or something like that."

Malloy believed the signs will be removed  "at the time they nominate somebody next year."
