A Westborough physical therapy firm is becoming known for its work with cancer patients.

Six South County Physical Therapy physical therapists are certified in the Survivorship Training and Rehabilitation Program developed by local physician Julie Silver, a breast cancer survivor.

South County Physical Therapy lymphedema and oncology specialist Jennifer Goyette told Westborough Patch recently that SCPT seeks to “train more of the therapists in oncology: take the ins and outs of the current research and diagnosis."

Goyette said that for cancer patients, "the scars are still there, internally and externally," after radiation and chemotherapy.

Physical therapists can tailor treatments to address such issues, said Goyette, who became STAR certified in 2011.

Scar tissue can be massaged, for example, she said.

South County Physical Therapy also has partnered with the Westboro Tennis and Swim Club, across the street, "to help patients begin low-intensity training at SCPT before transitioning to more intense exercises with fitness trainers" from the club, all of whom are versed in the hurdles," according to a recent press release.
