Figure Skating Club Presents 'American Idol' Show

Hundreds of fans cheered on their favorite local skaters at the North Star Youth Forum.

A sheet of ice replaced the stage, figure skates and glitzy costumes replaced microphones, and a crowd of more than 400 fans replaced the three notorious judges when the North Star Figure Skating Club presented its version of American Idol Saturday at the .

The American Idol theme set the stage for more than 80 skaters—ages 5 through adult—to showcase the skills they have been perfecting over the last year.

“Our skaters will culminate their busy year of testing and competing by showing off their skills in group and individual routines," said Danielle David, assistant to the skating director. "The theme of the show allows the skaters to show off their personalities while skating to songs performed during American Idol or sung by contestants, judges and mentors.”

The iconic American Idol logo surrounded by silhouettes of skaters and cheering fans provided a backdrop for the program, which featured skaters whose skills ranged from basic skills through the advanced level of junior freestyle.

Choreographers, coaches and professional staff at North Star worked together to select songs from the American Idol songbook for 37 unique and energetic numbers that comprised the two-and-a-half hour performance.

"All the numbers take so much work from both the coaches and skaters. My favorite is when all the skaters are smiling at the end of their performance,” said Denise Marco, director of figure skating for the North Star Figure Skating Club and executive director of the North Star Youth Forum.

In addition to solo and group numbers, this year’s event featured several new performances. The Ocean State Ice Theatre performed a “Red Riding Hood” themed theatrical skating program, set to music based upon the classic children’s story. The troupe had 17 skaters that used props on the ice while skating.

After the intermission, the crowd enjoyed performances by the Blazing
Blades Synchronized Skating Teams Beginner and Open Juvenile Teams. Both teams competed at the Wallace Spring Open and Hayden New England Challenge Cup competitions earlier this year.

Marco shared her enthusiasm for the sport and the 27th annual show by telling Westborough Patch: “Coaching is my passion—it is more than a job. All of us begin skating for fun and this is the time to show off. It is important to bring our skaters together as a club, to form new friendships and to make a memory for all our members and their friends and families.

“All involved did an amazing job," Marco said. "With the addition of my new assistant, Danielle David, I believe each year going forward will be better than the year before.”
