New Hi-Vis Crosswalk Signs: Thank You Westborough DPW!

Thanks very much Westborough DPW (Dept. of Public Works) for installing new high visibility crosswalk signs at high traffic pedestrian crossings in town.

This whole - and not very expensive - effort started this time last year with a couple people in the second story office of the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts pointing out a dangerous crosswalk at 33 Lyman St.

I mentioned the problem to our town Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) as well as to Town Manager Jim Malloy, Police Chief Al Gordon and DPW Manager John Walden. Together we came up with a plan to draft a town meeting article requesting $20,000 to improve crosswalk signage at 20+ sites in town and possibly otherwise improve crosswalk visibility on the pavement itself. In the meantime, we got a beautifully detailed request from a resident highlighting a problematic crosswalk linking housing on Flanders Road to the nearby Southborough MBTA train station. Terrific!

In March this year, the town approved the funding request article. This fall, when the funds became available, the DPW ordered the signs and right away started installing them. I saw this sign the other day while I was on the bike at the same Flanders Road crossing mentioned above. I couldn't help but say "WOW!" out loud and then turn around to take the picture shown at the top of the page. Great!

Bottom line: Working together efficiently, getting something done - and having fun doing it. Nothing better! Thanks again to everyone involved.
