More West Nile Virus Mosquitoes Found in Westborough Amid Record U.S. Outbreak

More Westborough mosquitoes have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, coinciding with the largest outbreak of the disease in U.S. history.

The latest Westborough results were announced today, Director of Public Health Paul McNulty said.

A Westborough mosquito pool collected from the Hadley Lane area July 31 tested positive for West Nile. It was Westborough's first West Nile positive mosquito pool since 2009, Westborough Board of Health Sanitarian Steven Baccari has said.

No human cases of West Nile have been reported in Westborough this summer.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1,118 cases of West Nile in humans have been reported among 47 states this year, "the highest number of West Nile virus disease cases reported to CDC through the third week in August since West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999." The total includes 47 deaths.

Abourt three-quarters of the 1,118 cases have come from either Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Dakota or Oklahoma, the agency said, "and almost half of all cases have been reported from Texas."

McNulty offered residents this advice: "be cognizant that it's out there."

"It's out there," he said.

"When stuff is out there, it could happen."

The high threat of has closed Westborough's recreation fields, all school fields and all town parks at sunset until further notice since last Friday.
