Our photo of the day comes from Jane Keller Gordon, who does some volunteer work at Heirloom Harvest. Heirloom Harvest, a certified organic farm in Westborough, still has shares available for 2012. According to the farm website, shareholders receive 8 to 15 vegetable items a week over a 22-week season. On Thursday, May 17, Westborough High School will crown Mr. WHS 2012. As part of the fundraising pageant, the nine contestants collected food for the Westborough Food Pantry and can be seen here making the donation. Arielle Sigel and Katie O'Hara stood at the entrance to Westborough High School on Saturday to remind passersby about the ongoing Class of 2014 plant sale. Held annually, the event is a dual effort of the American Heart and Stroke Association’s national campaigns aimed at bringing women together to end heart disease and stroke.
Photos courtesy of Arielle Sigel. The Westborough High School Rangers varsity girls tennis team was at the DCU Center in Worcester on Wednesday to help at the Fed Cup. The players served as community volunteers at the Fed Cup Kids Fest Day, part of the festivities preceding the weekend matches. The team operated and managed several instructional and activity stations during Kids Fest. The girls were chosen from a number of volunteer applications to help at the event. Among the dignitaries scheduled to join the team were the Williams sisters and Gov. Deval Patrick.

The Hundredth Town Chorus performed at Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Westborough on Wednesday, Dec. 21, bringing residents the sounds of the season. The chorus was established in the 1950s by the Westborough Women's Club and sings classical, popular, folk, Broadway and holiday music. Directed by Wendy Damoulakis, the group entertains at rest and nursing homes in December and May. About 40 Cub Scouts from Westborough Pack 100 shared holiday tunes with residents at Beaumont Nursing Home on Saturday, Dec. 3. Accompanied by guitars, drums, a violin and more, the boys shared classics such as Frosty the Snowman, Silent Night and Jingle Bells. Several dozen residents attended the show along with the family and friends of the Cub Scouts. Officer Craig Hillier ended a 31-year career with the Westborough Police Department this afternoon. A reception in his honor drew dozens of police personnel, both current and retired. “This is a sad day for me,” said Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon. “We’ve spent our whole careers together, but it goes further than that.” Gordon recalled that the two men went to Westborough High School together, each graduating in the early 1970s. The Westborough Fire Department pulled a ladder truck into the parking lot of St. Luke's Church on Ruggles Street this afternoon to share with a group of excited preschoolers. The children, ages 3 to 5, are students at Miss Tanya's Nursery School, just across the street from the parking lot. Eyes grew wide as the ladder was extended far into the air and a firefighter in full gear spoke to the students.
