Or maybe, with patience and determination, one of Westborough's teachers helped clear an obstacle to a child’s comprehension and success. Let us know who deserves this honor and why by sending the information to: MaryJo.Kurtz@patch.com. And …

Julio’s Liquors will be open on Monday, the day after Christmas, operating as "business as usual." But until this past Tuesday, liquor stores in Massachusetts were technically not going to be able to open the day after Christmas, according to a provision in the "blue laws" that had not been changed. Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill that would allow package stores in Massachusetts to open on the day after Christmas, as the Boston Herald reported. Under previous state law, reported the Herald, "when Christmas falls on a Sunday—as it does this year—liquor stores must also remain closed on the …

It's not easy to travel the world in a single night. Santa and the reindeer reportedly get a little hungry as they repeatedly unload that sleigh. And, for those kids who have been especially good, Santa gets a workout. Westborough Patch wants to know if Santa and the reindeer are getting enough to eat when they stop by our town. What do you plan to leave the crew this year?
Don Landroche, 210 East Main St., said he has been sharing the holiday spirit with the community for about twenty years. His light displays attract revelers from around the surrounding towns, both when he lived on Haskell Street and now that he has moved to East Main Street. But at least one person is not too happy with the display, posting an anonymous letter at his home with a threat to take down the display. “Do you have any idea how ridiculous, ornate, and tacky all your outside decorations are??!!” the letter, which Landroche shared with Westborough Patch, reads. “There are people who …

With less than ten days until Christmas, it appears that Americans are willing to pad the holiday budget a smidge. The National Retail Federation (NRF) issued a statement yesterday in which it predicts that holiday spending is expected to rise 3.8 percent this year to a record $469.1 billion. In October, the group predicted a rise of 2.8 percent. “After strong sales reports in October and November, along with a successful Black Friday weekend, retailers are cautiously optimistic that this season will turn out better than initially expected, bringing added stability to our recovering economy …

Each Christmas season, as we decorate the tree, we are reminded of the good, the bad and the silly of family outings when we unpack each of the little trinkets. As the years have passed, our collection has grown and now takes up just about the entire tree. They are fun to look at as the days lead up to Christmas. Honestly, all decorated trees are fun to see. Whether it’s a collection of heirloom ornaments or some colorful Walmart specials…
