Congratulations to the girls U12 team of Westborough Town Soccer for a second place showing in the NCUP Tournament on June 17! The team, coached by Victor Delgado, Cheryl Goebel and David Sommerville, called itself The Tie-Dye Tiki Team. All fifth graders, the girls went undefeated in the fall. The team was the only completely fifth grade team in its division to qualify for the Nashoba League NCUP Tournament in the spring. Strong passing and ball control skills helped propel the team to a successful season. Strong goal keeping kept the team in the game during tight competitive matches. The …
Congratulations to the girls high school team of Westborough Town Soccer for taking the championship of the NCUP Tournament on June 17! In the Girls High School Division Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League, Westborough had 21 girls in 8th through 11th grades competing. The team went 5-1-2 during the spring season and advanced to the NCUP tournament as one of the top four out of eleven teams in the age group. On Saturday, June 16, the team was undefeated in three round robin games. The girls advanced to the finals on Sunday, June 17 to defeat Maynard. The team was coached by Sharon Connors …

Four Westborough residents were recently honored as Pacesetters in the 2011 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai. Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon, Sally Harwood, Timothy Horgan and Mill Pond School teacher Kathleen Swanson raised more than $15,000 of the nearly $7 million in the 2011 Jimmy Fund Walk, which benefits adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana Farber Cancer Institute. “The commitment of our walkers, especially at the Pacesetter level, is crucial to the Jimmy Fund Walk’s fundraising efforts,” said Ann Beach, director of the Jimmy Fund Walk. …

Casey Tarnow and Fiona Callahan won titles at the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Massachusetts State Championship Meet which took place in Auburn on Saturday, March 24. Casey placed first all-around in the Junior age division. Fiona finished second all-around in the Senior age division. Both girls, who attend Westborough High School, are teammates on the Level 9 USA Team from Elite Gymnastics Academy in Ashland, coached by former Olympic gymnast Ivan Ivanov and Jacqui Olsen. On Saturday, March 10, six Westborough free throw talents competed in the Knights of Columbus Central District Free Throw Competition held at St. Louis School in Webster. The group competed against 65 other hoopsters from across central Massachusetts. On Sunday afternoon, the Westborough girls’ basketball program gave area hoops fans a taste of the postseason a little early. The 10th Annual Westborough High School Girls’ Basketball Invitational Tournament kicked off with a handful of local squads battling it out in what will be the final tune-ups before the sectional tournament brackets are announced later in the week. On Wednesday night, the Westborough High School hockey team and its fans paid tribute to one of its own. Prior to the Rangers hockey game against visiting Oakmont Regional at the North Star Youth Forum, the squad held a moment of silence in remembrance of Shawn Marks. Marks, a 1988 graduate and a member of the Rangers hockey program, tragically passed away on February 15, 2002 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident the day before. He was 31 years old. Dozens of Westborough kids ages 10 to 14 showed up at Mill Pond School last night to take a shot in the annual Westborough Knights of Columbus free throw competition. In all, 41 contestants registered for the free competition, including 27 boys and 14 girls. “This is a national competition run by the Knights of Columbus,” said organizer Jim O’Connor. “These competitions are taking place all over the country.” After three warmup shots, each competitor tried for the most baskets out of 15 throws.
