"I talked earlier today personally with Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick Fil-A about the new reports that Chick Fil-A had capitulated to demands of the supporters of same sex marriage. This is not true. The company continues to focus on the fair treatment of all of its customers and employees, but to end confusion gave me this statement: “There continues to be erroneous implications in the media that …   more ›

Your Next Car: What's It Going to Be?

I'm hoping to drive my old beater into the ground before we need to get another car, but I'm on the lookout. What's your next car going to be?

My wife and I drive a perfectly good 2002 Nissan Sentra with 127,318 miles on it. "Stella" has four wheels and gets us from Point A to Point B. We've reached the stage in the life of the car where we don't repair body damage (as you can tell from the accompanying photo). I'm ashamed for my Dad to see it. But hey, it's paid for. Even though I'd love to get 200K miles out of Stella, she has some mechanical problems, like a seized bolt that has left the transmission fluid unchangeable for about eight years. She could conk out any old day. So we've been on the lookout for our next car. I'm paying attention to car commercials, asking friends about their cars. You know the feeling. We're looking for something that gets good gas mileage, and is …

Scott, I like your style. I also like how wicked they look in black and now that the new generation offers 4WD it is definitely at least a little pragmatic. For the same reasons, the Chevy Trailblazer SS will always have a spot in my dream garage.   more ›

Downtown Has a Piccadilly Again

Piccadilly Place, featuring apartments and commercial space, opened in the former Piccadilly Pub building Tuesday.

Downtown Westborough has a Piccadilly again, in the same, now renovated, building as the previous one. Piccadilly Place, an apartment and commercial project, opened Tuesday at the Milk Street sites which previously had a Piccadilly Pub restaurant, as well as a Fayco Kitchen Bath Center. Selectmen Vice Chairman George Barrette and state Rep. Danielle Gregoire (D-Marlborough) cut the ceremonial ribbon. Project and town leaders then toured the building, which is owned by Stonegate Group LLC of Natick. Stonegate Chief Operating Officer Dean Calivas said that when the developers mentioned to town officials that they were working on "the old Piccadilly Pub building," a "smile would come to their face." “So, it’s quite natural for us when we …

Westborough selectmen OK seasonal liquor license.

A Shrewsbury winery will offer samples and sell wines at the Westborough Farmers' Market for the fourth straight season. Selectmen on Tuesday night approved a seasonal vintner's agricultural event/farmers market special liquor license for Zoll Brothers Private Cellar Winery for June 13 to Sept. 26. Frank Zoll told the board that his winery "will offer limited samples, once we ID people." "We typically do two or three samples of about a tablespoon each, just so people can try the product," Zoll said. "We haven't had any issues, to my knowledge." The Westborough Farmers' Market will run from noon to 6 p.m. every Thursday at the Congregational Church of Westborough, starting June 13, according to the event's website.

Ann & Hope Cash Drawer $9,900 Over

A customer's innocent error caused the problem.

A customer's innocent error caused a cash drawer at the Ann & Hope Curtain and Bath Outlet to be $9,900 over on Saturday, Westborough Police Chief Alan Gordon said today. "An investigation showed a female making a purchase of shelving for $1,173. The cashier received cash for the purchase. The customer handed the cashier cash which she thought were $10 bills in packs of ten. What she actually handed the cashier were $100 bills in packs of 10," Gordon said in a press release. "The investigation revealed that the customer was a 63 year old Leominster resident who has been suffering with an illness which has affected her cognizant faculties. The money has since been returned to her." The store opened last month at Westmeadow Plaza, at Milk …
