Westborough High School Principal John Smith has resigned, effective at the end of this school year, Superintendent Marianne O'Connor said Wednesday night.

Smith announced his plans last Friday, O'Connor told the school committee.

School officials "wish him the best" as he pursues "other interests in the field of education," O'Connor said.

"John's six years of leadership have certainly added to the achievements we've witnessed at the high school," she said.

"He certainly is a champion for students."

O'Connor told Westborough Patch afterward that she will discuss the search for a new principal with the administration in January.
