Westborough Patch Enters 'Go Get 'Em' Era
The command chair's newest occupant says hello. Say hello back, and he'll reply.
A former colleague used to say, "Go get 'em!" when he saw me pursuing a story.
The Go Get 'em Era of Westborough Patch starts today.
Readers of Sharon Patch, where I’ve been editor since the site launched on Oct. 5, 2010, will tell you the site was filled daily with stories about their town.
Expect the same here, starting now.
The new person in this command chair loves local news, and has been in the business full time for 20 years.
Westborough Patch will continue being the place to learn – and discuss – what's happening in town.
Readers are encouraged to send story ideas to Michael.Gelbwasser@patch.com, or call me at 781-315-3175.
Or stop me when you see me around town.
Which will happen a lot.
Because I believe in being visible in the community. And covering a little of a lot. Because I want all of Westborough to feel included and welcomed on Westborough Patch.
At the same time, I'd love feedback on what readers would love to see Westborough Patch try or tackle.
I'm the new kid here.
Although, not totally new.
Rutland is my hometown, and my family spent a lot of time in the Westborough area when I was a kid.
The chance to come home, of sorts, made coming here appealing. I know things have changed since I was last around. I’m eager to discover how.
Readers should also know:
- I've collected comic books since high school. Which is a long time. I’ve seen the first Michael Keaton "Batman" film, "Green Lantern" (and I own a power ring, as well as a Justice League of America T-shirt) and "The Avengers" on opening night, and "The Amazing Spider-Man" on opening weekend. (I haven't seen "The Dark Knight Rises" yet, but I've read the spoilers and will go soon.) I'm mostly a DC guy, but I think Marvel fans are people too.
- I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan, and have even covered a handful of PawSox games over my career (including a miserable David Wells rehab start that ended with some journeyman lefty named Mike Holtz giving up two homers in the ninth and in the cold rain. He forever became Mike "Bleeping" Holtz to me that night.). Tomorrow is the baseball trading deadline. Had I started here Wednesday, Patch would've had to pass me through waivers first. Which is a relief. Because I heard the Mets were interested, and I really, really didn't want to go to the Mets.
- I'm a local history buff (see also: "Grew up in the exact geographic center of Massachusetts"). Note to the Westborough Historical Society: I'm told I'm harmless.
Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed. Time to go get 'em.

Welcome to the Patch, Michael - we Westboroughites are a a frank, opinionated bunch known to throw it down on The Patch, but we're pretty okay, once you get to know us! ;-)

Hiya, Amy.
Debate is very, very cool. Bring it on. Besides, how bad can you folks be? :)
And, did I see right? Wachusett vs. Westborough football here Oct. 26. I'm Wachusett '86.

Hi Hanan,
I'm glad. I enjoyed my first day here, and I've already begun learning my way around. People will see more of me as the weeks progress.
Sharon Patch developed a very strong, positive reputation as a local news and information source.
Westborough Patch has similar standing here.
I expect readers will see me bring some of the tools I've learned in Sharon and elsewhere here. And Westborough Patch readers' suggestions are more than welcomed.
I do ask: issues with stories should be directed directly to me. My door is always open.

Thanks, Tony.
I don't expect to replace MaryJo. But, Westborough Patch readers should know they've gotten a veteran journalist here.
More and more people will hear from or see me over the next few weeks. Outreach is huge for me.
