Westborough Joining Greater Grafton Medical Reserve Corps

There's no cost to Westborough.

Westborough’s volunteer Medical Reserve Corps will be coordinated through a new Greater Grafton Medical Reserve Corps.

Grafton Health Director Lois Luniewicz told the Westborough Public Health on Tuesday night that the Grafton Medical Reserve Corps has served just her town since the group formed in 2006.

The new Greater Grafton Medical Reserve Corps is part of reorganization efforts throughout the Worcester area, to improve the groups’ effectiveness, she said. The region’s public health coalition had included 74 communities, she said.

The Grafton-area group is inviting Westborough, Northbridge and Sutton to join it at no cost to those towns, Luniewicz said. Grafton health staff will administer it, she said.

Luniewicz said the Greater Grafton group wants to “make our presence known” in Westborough through, for example, attending events.

However, “I’m not going to come into Westborough in any way, shape or form until Paul gives me the go-ahead,” she said of Westborough Director of Public Health Paul McNulty.

McNulty said, “I’m 100 percent in favor of this.”

“The MRC’s been around for a number of years. But it really takes an interested and motivated person with time to coordinate this, to keep the volunteers motivated, and we just don’t have that in the department right now,” he said.
