Unfriendly Sign on Friendly's Restaurant: Closed

Employees were seen cleaning inside the building.

The Friendly’s Restaurant location at 303 Turnpike Rd. in Westborough permanently closed its doors for business today. A sign posted on the front entrance was getting attention from drivers who cruised slowly around the building at about 9:30 a.m.

“We came for ice cream,” said Ann, a Northborough mother who pulled into a parking space this morning with her 2-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter. “I was here about a month ago. I didn’t know it was going to close.” She started to put her son back into the car and said she would look for somewhere new to take an ice cream break.

The front doors were propped open and lights were on inside the restaurant. Two employees were seen working in the kitchen area. Both appeared to be cleaning the restaurant.

“I can’t comment,” a young woman working in the restaurant told Westborough Patch. “You have to call corporate.”

The sign on the door reads, “Thank you for your patronage. This restaurant has permanently closed.”

This is the second of two Westborough Friendly's locations to go out of business. The Friendly's location at 96 Turnpike Rd. closed on Oct. 5 when the company announced its bankruptcy.

I really don't like seeing a regional icon wither away. Feels like Filene's Basement. The last time I was in the "just closed" Friendly's they could only serve (free) coffee as their systems were down. A paper based backup system didn't seem like a leap they could make.

I learned that this location had the largest seating capacity of any Friendly's in MA. After the other location closed in October, the service here finally improved. It is a shame to see it close as well.

Lots of great memories going to both Friendly locations as a child for birthday parties, after soccer practice on a blustery fall day and with friends during my high school years.

I worked at the Webster, MA Friendly's restaurant for 4 years when I was in high school and college. My wife and I started dating shortly after she started working at the Friendly's in Webster. Friendly's will always hold a special place in our hearts.
