The READ Program Brings Dogs to the Library

Research shows that reading to dogs can help children improve their skills.

Dogs can’t read, but they can be great listeners – especially Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ). A new program coming to the will introduce registered therapy dogs and their owners/handlers as reading companions to children who are emergent or hesitant readers.

A demonstration of the new program will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to drop in and meet a READ team and learn more about the program’s successes around the country.

The program is designed for emergent readers in grades 1 through 3. It runs for a half hour each week for four weeks. The first session is schedule to begin on Monday, Oct. 17 at 5:15 or 6 p.m. Space is limited and registration will begin on Thursday, Oct. 6.
