The Farmer’s Market is spearheaded by David McMahon, co-executive director of the Dismas House of Massachusetts. According to McMahon, the Farmer’s Market “allows us to combine our interests and passions for our farm (at the Dismas House), our desire to help people in need in our programs, and also to create a regular and interesting downtown event that includes eclectic vendors and fun activities for kids, especially as we have kids of our own. Also, this market allows a diverse array of healthy and local food, art, crafts, jewelry, and more to be brought right to the customer, supporting local businesses, entrepreneurs and farms.”

As undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame, Westborough homeowners McMahon and his wife learned of the Dismas House model, which offers a small scale transitional home environment for former offenders. The Dismas Family Farm is their newest home. The staff there are looking forward to offering the wood products and produce that the residents at the farm work hard to produce.

“What is great about this market,” said McMahon, “is that it accomplishes many goals. The market offers seven to eight Westborough based farms, entrepreneurs, artists, and businesses opportunities to offer their wares. The market allows local and regional farms a direct-to-customer outlet for produce and helps to keep these farms as a part of our central Massachusetts landscape. The market offers fresh and healthy food to the people of Westborough, and a shopper at the market could potentially purchase a whole dinner from local sources - beef, lamb, pork, produce, wine, honey, goat cheese, and Massachusetts maple syrup.”
