Special Memorial Gathering to Honor Special Volunteer
Resident Alissa Tartaglia loved scrapbooking.
Alissa Tartaglia loved scrapbooking. And her volunteer efforts in Westborough created many fond memories for community members.
Now, Tartaglia's friends are inviting the public to share photos and memories of her on Thursday night, for a scrapbook for her husband Dan and sons Josh and Jake.
A special memorial gathering for Tartaglia will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Boston, 5400 Computer Drive.
Tartaglia, 38, of Westborough died Feb. 23. She was diagnosed with leukemia in early October, according to resident Michelle Scerbin.
Tartaglia actively volunteered in Westborough at events for the schools, the boy scouts and other community groups, and urged her children to do the same, Scerbin said Monday night.
"She loved scrapbooking, but didn't have much time to do it" in Westborough, Scerbin said.
"We thought, 'What a great way to honor her.'"
The Tartaglias moved to Westborough when Dan became executive chef at Wegman's in Northborough, Scerbin said.
"She came into this town and hit the ground running. She said, 'I don't know anybody, but I'm going to get involved,'" Scerbin said.
"To be as immersed in this community in that timeframe is a reflection on how committed she was to life and her community," she said.
On Veterans' Day, Tartaglia would say to her family, 'We have Veterans' Day off. What are we going to do to honor veterans?'" Scerbin said.
The Westborough High School varsity football team dedicated one of its games to Tartaglia, she said.
"She brought light to everyone," Scerbin said.
"I think her husband will be very, very surprised by the outpouring."
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tartaglia Children's Fund, Central One Federal Credit Union, 40 South St., Westborough, MA 01581, Account #800648886.
