New Fire Station Should be Ready in Early 2015

Construction should start late this summer.

Westborough's new fire station should be ready for occupancy in January or early February 2015, Town Manager Jim Malloy said Tuesday night.

Selectmen Vice Chairman George Barrette said construction should start late this summer.

Cost estimates are expected in May, said Barrette, who serves on the municipal building committee. The project will go out to bid in June.

“We’re moving along," Barrette said.

"Things are going well. We’re really getting into the nitty gritty at the fire station.”

Voters at the Oct. 15 special town meeting authorized $11.2 million to design and construct the new station next to the current one at 42 Milk St., which will be demolished. Voters agreed to borrow $10,008,000 and allocate $1,200,000 from free cash.

The new building's size has been reduced to 26,840 square feet, Barrette said.

“Any more reduction in the size of the building would be cutting program space,” he said.

“It’s not appropriate for us to do that.”
