Letter: Public Health Group Supports Gun Control
The Massachusetts Public Health Association backs Governor Patrick's proposals.
To the Editor:
As the country beings to reevaluate the gun control laws in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy, it is important to examine the nuances of the proposed changes. As a leader of prevention and wellness, the Massachusetts Public Health Association views gun control as the best means for preventing related tragedies.
MPHA supports Massachusetts Governor Patrick in reinforcing firearm laws to include a number of preventative measures that will promote the health and safety of residents. The laws limit the number of firearm purchases an individual can make, work to ensure that every purchaser of firearms undergoes a background check, and restrict access to high-powered rounds of ammunition. Additionally, the laws propose to put $5 million towards mental health services, including funds for intervention training and the Child Psychiatric Access Program, to help with early diagnosis and treatment of mental health.
These proposed steps must be put into action to help protect the public’s health and wellness.
