Many of Scottish descent are marking their heritage today as it is National Tartan Day, the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath – better known as the day in 1320 that Scotland declared its independence. According to the official website, over 11 million Americans claim Scottish and Scotch-Irish roots. This makes them the eighth largest ethnic group in the US.

2. The cost of owning and operating a vehicle in the US increased 3.4 percent, according to results of a study released by AAA yesterday. The study showed a 1.9 cent rise per mile to own and operate a sedan, making the total 58.5 cents a mile. That equates to $8,776 a year. The survey results are based on 15,000 miles of annual driving and take into account increases in gas, tires and depreciation.
