29 Town Employees Were Paid Over $100K in 2011

All salary information taken from the 2011 Westborough Employee Earnings Report.

During the this week, at least two voter comments referenced the salary that taxpayers are giving to Town Manager Jim Malloy — both inferring that Malloy is highly paid. One reader emailed Westborough Patch asking if Malloy is the highest paid employee in town and if he is the only employee making over $100,000. The answer to both questions is no.

Westborough Patch examined the recently released 2011 Employee Earnings Report and learned that Malloy is one of 29 town employees paid over $100,000:

Chief Alan Gordon explained that some of the figures for employees of the police department include detail payments. A detail is when an officer voluntarily works outside of his/her normal employment hours to do additional work — for example, if a utility is installing equipment in a roadway and needs an officer to direct traffic in the work area.

In those instances, the contractor (in the example, that would be the utility company) pays the town $43 an hour for the officer and an additional 10 percent surcharge ($4.30 per hour). All of that money goes to the town of Westborough, and the officer is paid by the town for the detail work. That is why the additional payments are reflected in the 2011 Employee Earnings Report.

The additional surcharge is kept by the town and deposited in the general fund. In 2011, the surcharge total kept by Westborough totaled $32,500.
